Well crazy or not, I recommend that no matter what battery type you
decide to go with, install a _battery holder_ and forget the stupid
notion that batteries should be soldered down. I'm sure that it had a
valid reason at the time most manufacturers were doing it, but you can
now get some nice battery holders with snap on lids that will prevent the
battery from moving. And then replacement will be a snap later (when the
battery goes dead again).

I think you can see it in one of the last pictures on the page.
As for voltage, it depends from one manufacturer to another. I've
seen it range from 3V to 3.6V and up. If it is one of the charging
types, I've heard of people ripping the charging circuit out in favor of
a static system (prevents battery leakage, I guess).
