reverb can w/synths

I'm still at a loss for feedback on reverb can preferences.  I guess not
too many of you have played with them.  One suggested an LM387 driver but
that IC has been discontinued by glorious National Semiconductor.  I'd
still like to know of any preferences for driving circuits - I saw one
description recommending a current-drive arrangement (opamp feedback
path), but this requires an isolated driver coil.  

Also have any of you played with the various lengths of cans and delay
times of each?  With synths is the longer delay time unit the one to go
with?

As these are used in guitar amps more than anywhere else, what's the hot
ticket for reverb amps these days?
