Yes, well -- 
keep in mind it's relative to the local cost of living -- here in the
northern California bay area, where gasoline averages $2 a gallon, half a
million dollars will get you a nice little two bedroom stucco house, the
monthly utilities for that house (electric, gas and water) average about
$250, and the (mandatory) car and home insurance rates are the highest in
the land, $8 an hour will allow you to live nicely on the street.
