You must be doing something wrong then. I have done SMD stuff with 0,3 mm lines. No problem. I can do 8 point text without problem. Actually the limitation is the printer, which only prints 300 dpi resolution. I can actually see the jaggies from the printer pixels on the etched board.
I use a  HP Deskjet 720C printer and print on HPs inkjet transparencies.
