I think I've read that it was phase pointer and table.

There are some hints:

The other 15 waveforms in the more recent models can be all
made out of twisted versions of such sine tables, by
changing the speed, mirroring etc. of the pointer.

And, the frequency can be changed in real time over a very wide
range, I guess changing the appropriate IIR filter coef. in
real time could pose some trouble.

And the (bad) filters show, that the Yamaha guys were not so good
in filtering algorithms at that time.
