I bought a couple of those Maplin boards too.

The 2045 is an OTA based filter , like the CEM3320, it adds very little
colouration to the sound, so doesn't really have much character.

I replaced the filter in a Roland Sh09 with a SSM2045, and it sounded great
- but the oscillator on the 09 is far from pure, so it had enough character
to compensate for the filter.

Definately worth building though.
