stupid questions...

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but
how can you determine which are the E,C and B of a
transistor, without any datasheet? Or where can you
get these datasheets all-in-one, don't want to spent
to much of the little spare time i have looking for
datasheets on the net...
And another stupid question, how can you see the
difference between logarithmic and linear pots?

And if you really want to be helpfull, get me started
with a very very easy project to get into the
diy-thing. It needs a quick result and a pcb-layout...
