Thanks to everyone who posted and wrote me via private mail.  Just checked 
the mail but will look into options presented.

Also thanks for all the postings on cool electroacoustic slinky rigs/pipe 
tuning projects.  

My humble addition to all this din is trying an E-Bow on some of these 
springs.  I've "played" the springs in spring reverbs with an E-Bow.  You can 
get some feedback-like sounds from that and from playing the tines of toaster 
oven racks.  

Being one of those who can't bear to chuck away anything, I played a big, 
semi-functional Toastmaster with the grill extended most of the way out of 
the oven.  Yep, the E-Bow drives the tines much like they were strings.  And 
I played its smaller replacement oven, too.  Each oven has is own tone, 
resonances, etc.

Other such found object opportunities no doubt await.  Possibly using speaker 
driver/contact mic setups in these ovens for that tinny, but cavernous sound.
