I concur with this.  I've got a little pair of those cheap "multimedia"
speakers that came with my PC that I have on my workbench.  They've got
power and volume controls, and they're cheap enough that if I toast 'em, I
wont care too much.

Not hi-fi quality, but enough to tell me whether I'm getitng sound to the
outputs!
