I think it *IS* a LED/LDR combo, but if you look  at the manufacturer's
data sheets for similar devices, you see a very wide range of response
times, decay times, transfer curves etc.
I don't think there is any kind of 'secret weapon' here, but even so, it 
could be difficult to exactly clone some past device.
