Vactrols (was: New Stuff)

As the discussion touches vactrols, I have a question regarding these
buggers: what are the original ones ?

I suspect it is not just a combination of a LED and a LDR (CdS?), but
a some kind of special photocells. I remember there were some points
risen (JH?) about their sonic superiority in bandpass/formant filters
(vide KORG PS3300, MAM Resonator).

Is there something really special in these semiconductors ? Is it possible
to achieve similar results using a LED+LDR ?
