All,
HT8955, YUCK!!! I built one of these...
what a waste of IC sockets.. its noisy as hell.. sooo much
digital bleed through from the main oscilator circuit, that
its next to unusable.
Just thought Id say...

It mgiht be the Holtek 8955 echo chip. It's got AD/DA converters, plus
address and data lines for a RAM. With an 8955 and a RAM, that would be the
"two echo chips" mentioned in the original post.
For those looking into Holtek chips, you might also want to check out the
8950, a "voice modulator" chip. They also make some 3-pin packaged devices
that will play "Happy Birthday", etc.
