Mono vs Stereo

Hello All!

I was originally planning on building my percussion synth 
with stereo output, allowing me to pan each *drum* to 
wherever desired, but now I'm not so sure. I want to build 
various effects to further modify the sound (tape echo, 
leslie, spring reverb, etc.), but that means each effect 
will also have to be built with two channels. This results 
in much higher cost and complexity, as well as less ease of 
use.

Is the extra flexibility and range of sounds worth the 
trouble? What is the norm or standard with this or is there 
one? Has anyone had any thought provoking experiences with 
this? Any and all thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!
