drum synthesizers

I'm new to this list and analogue synthesis in general (and even analogue
electronics in general).  However, I've done a lot of digital signal
processing in the past and have written something called gsyn that sounds
almost like a digtal 303 emulator.  So I apologize, as this is probably a
newbie question.

Anyhow, I've never been able to synthesize anything that sounds remotely
convincing as a drum, be it a snare or bass or even those lame 808
"rimshot" noises.  What is the basic concept behind drum synthesis?  Do you
use the same ol' VCO/VCF/VCA configuration with noise generators thrown
into the mix?  Is there anything on the web that goes in-depth on this
subject?
