No, one doesn't need to use calculus at all in any of these designs. A
good understanding of analog design and a good understanding of what each
circuit needs to do is all that is required. An ability to do some
research as deep as you wish to understand is nice too., 

I use nothing more than occassional first level algebra in any design.
When I am feeling *really* adventurous, I use a trig identity to check a
design's response and results. I have a Master's degree in EE, so I have
been through all those classes.
