Tube Synth

Hi DIY,

I gotta admit - recently I've been reading up on tubes... I've got three old
Dynaco Mark III's in the garage, two of which need some serious cap jobs in
the power supply section. (It's always good to have a working sample, eh?)
I've been scanning the web (casually, work and kids prevent any kind of
intense pursuit) hoping to find some modern caps with a high enough voltage
rating. Then I'll get samples from the reps at work, ha ha.

So now I know that triodes have control grids and tetrodes have those plus
screen grids and pentodes have that plus suppressor grids and all that
stuff... I think I could actually design some simple preamps at this point.

Then along comes my mother-in-law's friend, who says "you can have these, at
least YOU'LL appreciate these" and gives me an old McIntosh 225 amp and
MX110 tuner which I dust off and a few tubes later they're blasting away on
my workbench. Gotta set up a better stereo system some day...

Then me wife and I watched Star Trek Insurrection last night, and some dopey
alien ambassador corners Capt Picard and says "someday I must tell you about
my latest theory on thermionic transconductance" and I say to my wife, "Hey,
he's talking about vacuum tubes". She thought that was pretty funny. Typical
Star Trek.

I did a count the other day and realized that I own 14 machines with tubes
in them.

Hey Eric, if you are listening, drop me an email if you get a chance - I
have some questions on quiescent bias adjustments in modified Dynacos.

Oops gotta run, kids just fell asleep..

- Gene
