To all SEM owners and DIY project people:
I've finally gotten quotes for one of my rack mount chassis metal work
designs. I got quotes for 10,20,30, and 50 piece lots. I'm going to by 10
peices myself (enough for 5 chassis plus extra blank panels) but if I can
get 5 others to go in with me (for the 20 piece price) I can save some money
on the cost for the 10pcs I want (almost half the cost).
The plans can be seen/downloaded from my website (you can ignore the "these
plans are not for sale" line). The plans for the Obie-3 chassis are the ones
to look at.:

Here's a synopsis of what it is: The box is 5U high, 19in rack. It can be
configured to hold a SEM with a patch panel or as a 5U generic proto box.
The unit is made of 6 peices. Two rackears (that are the sides and can be
inverted to make a table unit- you can make wood panels if you want also),
two chassis top and bottom pieces (they are identical mirror pieces at 4in
deep), one large rear panel and one small front panel. The SEM goes in the
other half of the front. A large rear panel can go on the front to make a
generic proto chassis if wanted (great for a sequencer!). Its assembled with
6-32 hardware (user provided - unless I can get a good deal for them from
work) All metal is 20gauge electrogalvaneal steel (looks like the grey
unpainted chassis used in most consumer stereo gear, only thicker) except
the rackears which are 14gauge. **All parts are unpainted**
So how how much?
1) If I can get 5 more buyers (or 5 sets of metal plus my 5= 20pcs price),
for $80 plus COD shipping you get one set of all mentioned above plus one
extra blank large rear and blank small front (we all make mistakes drilling
patch panel holes).
2) If I can get enough orders to sell 10 of these things (plus my 5 units
worth=the 30pcs price) I can sell them for $60 a set.
3) If we can get to the 50pcs price (20 sets + my 5) the price gets down to
$40 a set. I would love that.
I can only hold the metal shop to these prices for a month. So if your
interested get your SEM or DIY friends together and e-me.
I know I've talked to a few of you before about these chassis and said I
would get back to you when I had quotes. That was a long time ago. This time
I wont fade away. If you want them, you will get them.
