For MIDI you really only benifit from using a 12 bit DAC if you are
implementing pitch bend. IIRC midi pitch bend uses 14 bits so it would be
better (and probably easier software wise) to use a 16 bit DAC. As Paul
said serial DACs are the way to go these days, using a flash ROM micro you
won't even need a data bus.
