Don't laugh, but I often plan my layouts on veroboard.
1st step draw schematics
2nd step draw schematics around DIL IC outline
3rd step soldering

I don't exaggerate step 2. But I get a good feeling how much space
between the IC's is needed, and sometimes I swap the IC orientation
in that stage.
