Well, some you load in 2 cycles, in the first you put the 8 most significant
digits
and the second load the remaining 4 and ignore the other 4 inputs, or
something like that.
But, the way the world has gone, most everything wants serial input now.
Which reduces the pinouts (main cost in manufacturing both chips and product).
I used a 16 bit serial input DAC. There's one in every broken disc player.
