Small world as I have one of these too.

First contact information -don't know if it still works though:
    Iota Systems
    POBOX 8987
    Incline Village, NV 89450
    (702) 831-6302

The product is designed to provide MIDI volume control of up to 8 audio
paths. Typically this would be used in the insert points in a mixing
console and as you summarized was used for MIDI mix automation. Connection
is done via stereo insert jacks. The TIP is input, the RING is output. The
common insert cables you can buy work well.

Operation is very straight forward and really should not require the manual.
You can operate it in one of two modes - NOTE or CC. In note each fader is
assigned a note number and the velocity is used to carry the fader setting.
In CC mode you can assign any CC message to carry the fader setting.

In operation you have the ability to attenuate the signal or mute it. A
separate mute command is available.

Each of the eight channels can be setup to have its own MIDI channel, fader
control, and mute control. programming is entirely from the front panel
menu system.

"Scenes" can be stored as programs and recalled via program changes.
Changing fader values using the rotary controller will transmit appropriate
midi messages to record.

I think it is pretty self explanatory and you should be able to use without
a manual. BTW the power supply is a 15VDC wall wort with 300mA capacity.

Internally I think you will find an 8031 (8051 family) uP with RAM, ROM,
etc. Also there are 8 12 bit multiplying DAC which are the attenuators. So
as a platform for DIY this is not a bad deal!

I think you did well for $10!!!
