We have used a shock sensor on and off on some of our disk drives that
looks much like a surface mount ceramic or xtal. It costs us something
like 50 cents in huge volume quantity. The sensitive axis is typically
some angle like 60 or 45 degrees in an attempt to be sensitive to rotary
motion, which would typically force a read/write head off track. I have a
bunch of these. If someone is really into experimenting with these
sensors I could send you a few if you send me a self-addressed envelope
(US only please). I just don't have the enthusiasm to experiment with
them right now.

Check out Digi-Key's latest catalog for
Measurement Specialties LDT Vibration Sensor LDT0-028K
Its a polymer sensor for bending mode apps... It screams to be tried as
a percussion pickup... I've been using a similar sensor for a kick drum
pedal for several years.
They also have accelerometers (single and three axis).
Lucas has some reasonably cheap pressure sensors...
Its shopping time....
