I like the lazy susan idea but replace the pot/sensor with a photo resistor
and DC light source. In the simplest config. put the photo resistor on one
part of the lazy-s and the light on the other. as the parts move away from
each other, the resistance changes. You could even modulate the light if
you wanted to.
