Multi axis foot pedals?

A friend of mine had a effect box that was a pair of multi-mode filters run
by a two-axis footpedal. It was called a "Pluto Pedal" ad I think it was
made in Great Britain. The pedal was roughly the size and shape of a
Bomerang Wha pedal and did the two axis thing. I don't remember how the
mechcanicals worked, but it was very smooth and responsive. The only easy
way I can think of to make one (without the need of a machine shop) would
be to make an optical pedal, moving a gradient film with two
photo-resistors instead of pots. You could print out the film on a laser
printer that can use overhead transparencies. Or you can do like the Morley
pedals and cut a logrithmic shaped hole (or holes) in a metal panel and
move it around with a modified footpedal. Looks like this method could be
used to make a bunch of unique controllers.
