Buy some used PAIA 4700 series gear... $500 bucks would probably get you a
monster... and it fits the "Quantity vs Quality" requirement.  I saw someone
selling a big system not too long ago.

You can (if you have the chops) improve the PAiA stuff a lot...  I still use
some in my modular... The VCA's are a favorite of mine.
