Sorry, I forgot to send this to the list as well as the original poster. 
bud is quite right...

The synth you saw Brian Eno ws without doubt either an EMS VCS3 or the 
"exactly the same only in a suitcase" version known as the EMS Synthi A.

The synth is well known in electonic music circles for it's amazing 
modulation capabilities (due to the matrix pin board) and the wild sounds 
which this helped produce. The method of synthresis is good old analogue 
though!
