regulating wall warts..

Hey list,
   I need to get a regulated +/-6v at 500ma.  I have a 6v wall wart that I 
could use...  Now, my question is, Is there a way that I could regulate this 
thing (a few caps, etc..)  could I use a regulator chip?  It seems to me that 
there's alot of extra space inside this module, so fitting a few components 
inside shouldn't be much of a problem..  Any thoughts?  Would a wart rated at 
around 1000ma work better?  Any info is appreciated, thanks
