Zip is a form of data compression, which is lossless. Just how well it
works (compression-wise) on audio files varies but it usually doesn't help
much. An additional advantage of zipping is that it allows you to put
multiple files into one file for convenient downloading. There's
checksumming involved so you'll know if anything got corrupted--it won't
unzip. A straight file transfer won't give you this extra protection.

MPEG Layer II & III are forms of information compression, and do throw
information away, as well as sometimes introducing unwanted artifacts (been
experimenting with that lately).
