If you missed me over the last day or so I went off into Sequencer-mode....
I've been letting the Seq2 simmer for a while. While I usually have a clear vision of what I want
before I begin something, I've had real problems the the Seq2. There are soooo many options you can
put in a hardware sequencer. Which do you choose? Where does cost/performance/options even out?
I have thought many times that I should just do the Seq1 and just stop trying to do something
different. The way the Seq1 works you can have as many steps as you want by hooking up more
sequencers. It really works well as the folks who built it know but I wanted something else.
So...Where are we at now? We are inspired by Serge that's where!
I have decided to go with a single 8-step 4516/4051 sequencer and then control it with 3 10-step
4017 sequencers . I'm going to throw in a few of those logic-radio switches, build a short buss
and strap 4051s across it, a couple more radio switches and we have a programmable 3X8 or 24 step
sequencer that switches instantly to your choice of 3 8-step sequences at any time!! Add a few more
radio switches and we will have the option of suspending the sequence and going to manual control.
There is a point you stop setting up a sequence and start playing the sequencer or the device stops
being a sequencer and becomes an musical instrument.
The idea is to set up a 3X8 sequence. The last-step 1-8 can be set. Within that sequence notes can
be off or on and the number of repetitions it plays 1-10 before advancing to the next selected
sequence or stopping can be set.
Once started the fun begins! If you press the "Manual" button the total-sequence is suspended and
you can select the current sequence to be played with the "1-2-3" buttons, at anytime the
current-sequence playing can be reversed or run up-down this will also suspend the total-sequence.
The total-sequence can be resumed by pressing the "Continue" button. While this is going on you
can change length, reps, turn notes/glide on/off or adjust them and multiply or divide the clock
frequency by 2. Sounds like a good time huh?
Each of the 24 pitch controls is a pull-for-off push/pull pot. I had to abandon the glide for each
step arrangement, because it costs so much and you would need a 6r space to put it in....So we have
one glide-pot per sequence. With some clever programming you can still do the same sort of thing as
the Seq1, it just switches between the sequences to do it.

I'll get the schematic a little more together and post it later. Here is a pic of the panel.

What do you think? Too much? Not Enough?
