I've played with the idea, reel2reel tape machines and a cassete recorder,
used as echo/delay devices with an extra tapehead connected to a microphone
input. I gave up on this since I was unable to do the mechanics. However
I've something interesting for you, since you would need an extra playback
amplifier.
(This would do the proper equalizing, which I never had in my experiments)
