Hmm, I can't say I have tried this (quick off and on), I will try over
the weekend.

An earlier version of the filter would latch up (go silent) when the Q
was raised to self-oscillation.  Lowering the Q control and then
lowering the cutoff would bring back the signal.  But this problem
disappeared when I put in the VC Q circuitry and I haven't had any
trouble since then.
