Well, my 2 cents:

AFAIK in binaural vinyl recordings it is not possible to cut all possible
phase relations between the channels. They have to limit the phase
differences for the signals because otherwise it is physically not possible
to cut the master. 
I *guess* this is done using some allpass filters equalizing.

The second point is, I remember a few readers letters to the Elektor magazine,
where they complained about CDs in which digital clipping occured, it
turned out that the artists and their sound engineers have a tendency to
overdrive their recorders.
Of course a magnetic-tape recorder would be more forgiving in this case
than the 
digital recorders.
