Hi all,
Having a bit over-digitalized project recording studio, I make sometimes copies on fair good cassetterecorder.
They always sound warmer, more spatial. Only 60dB (at the most) dynamic range. So thats not the issue. (130 db range for vinyl is incorrect, I think)
Using a tube-preamp has the same result.
There are nowadays many plugins to reduce the cold sound of digital recordings, make them more lo-fi, don't wonder why. It IS cold.
IMO oppinion there are several reasons for this:
1. Analog recordings are always more noisy. That's why we dither some difficult digital recordings.
2. There's a tendensy for a lot of years to make more 'impressive' productions, which become tiresome after some time, so 'old' recordings sound more relaxed, more natural.
3. They used no digital reverbs. If you have a spare room (big enough), put a speaker and a good mike in it, you'll get *natural* reverb.
4. It it also due to bad engineering. Indeed Sgt. Pepper on CD sounds like vinyl, and what to think of the brilliant (limited series)'White album', which sounds better than the original ever did.
5. There's no so called 'wow and flutter' (is it?). A string quartet using no vibrato sounds cold.
6. And so on and so on.....
