Hmm, this was covered here before, so I'll keep it short:
The 2164 is in no way a replacement for the 2024, and the
data sheet barely hides that fact.
The section "Upgrading 2024 sockets" would make for a
nice satire, but I fear it was meant seriously. They tell you
step by step what minor changes you have to do to adjust
the external components, and then at the end, lest we forget,
we have changed the control courve from linear to expo,
but expo is better anyway ! And in case you don't like that,
-verbal quote- "the difference may necessiate adjusting [...]
the circuits control voltage courve." This translates to:
"If you don't like the expo control function, we can also sell you
a logarithmic amplifier." (my translation)
And verbal again: "By making these relatively simple changes
the superior performance of the 2164 can be realized."
HA !
JH. (sorry longer than intended.)
PS.: I'm aware that many applications of the 2024 have used an external
expo converter, and in that case it's an improovement of course. AD
obviously have the pro audio mass market in focus, not us poor guys
who need an universal OTA building block.
