Hey Bud,
Ever listen to anything by Pole or Oval? or on the Mego label? There's a
lot of cool ambient percussive sections which scream what you're talking
about. Very laid-back tracks, not distorted or fast.. this music is
oriented around musical "mistakes", which are sampled and played with. I
dig this style a lot. You can use any number of things to create random
roughness (ok, that's every MORE non-technical) on tracks: filters,
vca's.. a compressor is nice but the effect is nothing you can't achieve
with regular modules.
Not sure what these folks use for gear.. I know oval use a PC and do a lot
of digital editing to create their tracks. Supposedly Pole uses a broken
Waldorf 4-pole. Panasonic use homebuilt analog gear (!).. saw them live
when they were in Boston. Wacky Finnish folk!
