Actually, its original target was the PowerPC processor, not a specific
platform. Which, of course, made the Mac a pretty obvious choice. At one
point there was furious speculation that Apple would buy the BeOS. The
rumours were vehemently denied by those "in the know" (Apple denied
comment). Then came the news that Apple had bought NeXT instead (without a
hint of a rumour) for some unbelievable sum (worth it to get Jobs back).
You could practically hear jaws hitting the floor. "But but but..." A lot
of people were _really_ disappointed.
Was it just a smokescreen to cover the NeXT negotiations? A new off-topic
for Synth-DIY: computer industry intrigue (mention of Microsoft doesn't
count).
