I tend to think of it as a master/apprentice type of relationship... Without the master, the apprentice is nothing. But while it is the hallmark of the learning process that the student will surpass the master, the wisdom of the master is never supplanted.

Funny how I will listen to a solid state synthesizer on a vacuum tube stereo, but not vice versa. Now how do I defend that? I'll accept an 'inferior' sound, as long as it is 'flawlessly' reproduced. Great!
