Xilinx Gate Arrays

    One of the things I have always wanted to do is build a hardware
digital synthesizer (as opposed to using a DSP).  I have been using
Xilinx gate arrays at work for quite some time now and have been
thinking that these would be great for building digital synth modules
in.  Before I plunk down the hard cash required to purchase the Xilinx
Foundation software, are there anyone on the list that is already trying
to do this, and would you care to share any thoughts?
