Well you're probably right. The bottom line is to get all the resolution
which is necessairy to edit your synth. Let's face the facts you all
love your modulars but carrying them to the gig is not very healty for
you or your synth. Stuff like the nord modular is an answer but it's
still not completed yet. Soundwise I can't compare them because I still
haven't got a REAL modular myself. But the control is also a very
important aspect of an instrument. 
512 pulses per rev will be fine if they won't have to control parameters
wich require a higher resolution. The solution is to control such
parameter (like pitch) with several revolutions of the knobs. Handy for
precise editing would be a focus mode where the knobs would opperate in
a fine mode.
