Touch Plates/Alternate controlers DIY

[Q-Bot Eye]

I play synths in a band, and right now I am constricted to controling them with
their built on keyboards. I am not a pianist, but a synthesist. I would prefer to
use some sort of more customized controller system possibly involving touch plates.
Is there any place on the web that has schems for such things? Also I would like it
to be something I could strap onto my body somehow, not just stand behind. 

I don't play a wind instrument, so wind controlers aren't my thing either, although
any and all strange ideas are welcome.
