The 6502 was available in 1/2/2.5 Mhz, I seem to recall.
Every instruction took a few cycles/microseconds...
Anyway, the 6502 is a good choice, and fast enough coded in assembler. My Lexicon LXP5 uses an ordinary Z80!
Also, the 6850 is great for the midi party.
A decade ago I was still using a C64. I wrote my own midisequencer, using a wirewrapped 6502/6850 card.
The c64 was there for the (lousy) screen and for the 5"floppy.
I could edit patterns realtime on the screen, the next time the sequence repeated itself it was stored in the card's memory. Best sequencer I ever had. Sadly the C64 had apperently a bus conflict between the CPU and the Video uP.
So I had to replace both every 2 years, at least. So after some time I decide to swith to the Atari platform, which is a bit obsolete by now also.
But 6502 coding is very simple compared with for example a 68Kxxx, as is the 6850 which is still used for midi (& keyboard) in my 68030 Atari.

So: keep it simple!
