Ok, since I just went through this I'll try and field your question..
I just bought a 4x write 8x read CD-R, a mitsumi IDE 4801-TE. It cost me
$154 or so, plus a little shipping. It works absolutely flawlessly on my
p90, and that's not a fast computer by todays standards. Other brands can
be found for around $200, maybe $250 for an external scsi.
Media is around $1 per CD with jewel cases, a little less without if you
buy them on a spindle. Again, very cheap.
I was debating getting cds professionally pressed of sounds from a Buchla
modular I have access to, but what I ended up discovering is that unless I
had 500+ pressed it wouldn't even be economical. Let's face it, am I
really going to be able to find distribution for 500-1000 cds of an
"amateur" recording of an obscure analog synthesizer? No, but a run of 100
might be feasible. And with CD-R's you can press more as the orders come
in.
Altho.. I'm honestly not sure how samples of a no-name-brand synth would
sell. Would people really want it? Would people really want to make cds of
their instruments? It _would_ be really cool to have a synth-diy sample
cd...
What would be _really_ nifty is if we got everybody on the list to compose
a loop or two and then had a run of lock-groove vinyl pressed. Slobber..
later
