Not shielded but twisted, they run as for pairs of balanced lines..
so you dont get any noise...
you could use 8 seperate signals, I mean you dont get that much noise from 
patch leads and such... not in my experience, unless my mobile phone is near 
the thing !!! Grr...

but would make exceptional patch cables for a poly-mod :-)
