a possible compromise for the wiring might be,
to have a small board with a ribbon cable socket on it.

That way, you can just put a ribbon cable on, and either
go off to a 'proper' panel, or just split wires off the cable to run to the 
appropriate point. Would be a bit like harness wiring, but no need to
actualy do any harnessing.
