I remember an Elektor article using an Yamaha GM/XG soundcard, very few components around it, midi in/thru,18 bits dac, DC-Filters, software editors on the web available.
It's called.... <processing> ... < processing>...
DB50XG! I think you can buy it for about +/- Hfl 300,-, 150 USD?
