diy GM synth

OK, I dont suppose many are wanting this, but i see 
Popular Electronics March 99 has a 'build your own
GM synth' with a couple of Crystal Semi chips.
Could be the basis of something more exotic?????

like generating raw sounds thru it & mangling them to buggery
with ringmods, ringmodding with other gm sounds, intermodulating
the simultaneous output audio with itself, etc.

Very low parts count anyhow.

Anyone tried, anyone experienced with this or similar chips?
