The LM387 is single supply audio preamp. I first used that chip about 19
years ago to build a 4-channel live sound mixer. Any op-amp replacement (the
NE5532 is a good choice) must deal with the splitting of the supply voltage
for bias reference. The LM387's popularity came from lack of a few good
op-amps in the 1970's to do low noise amplification at an economical price.
