Martin, you are right to some extend. And I was shocked when I saw
the sheet music for Oxygene (or was it Equinoxe) once in a library.
I could not believe that such simple harmonies were behind this music.
Which only leads me to the conclusion that the magic lies in other
ingredients than the chordal progressions - and magic they still have
for me after all these years. But it does explain why I don't like much of
his later work. Musicians change their use of sounds more easily than
their favorite harmonies over the years.
