The LM386 is a power amp. LM387 is a low noise audio preamp, similar to the
LM381, but in a 8 pin DIP pack.

According to National, there's no replacement. The IC expired last year, so
it's still possible to find it somewhere.

Better specs, no doubt, but the pinout isn't the same. I can make a small
PCB with a socket to the 5532 and long pins to fit in the original holes. 

The pinout of the 387:

V+	6
GND	3  (it's a single-supply unit)
IN-	2, 7
IN+	1, 8
OUT	4, 5

As the 387 is a single supply preamp, you'll have some fun modding the
circuit to use the 5532.
