There is no problem whatever with the 'two half wave rectifier' solution
if the voltage on the primary filter cap never goes 
below (regulator voltage + headroom).
 
Of course, I agree with everything about the decoupling caps.
And, it doesn't hurt to read the National Semi app notes and data sheets.
Finally,if your earth isn't a proper 'star' layout, that's asking for trouble, 
half, double or whatever rectifier.
